Preserving Our Cultural Heritage

Our cultural heritage is a precious gift left to us by our ancestors. It is our responsibility to cherish and safeguard it for future generations. YÉOL, with the support of experts and like-minded people, intends to be a pillar in the effort for the preservation of our rich cultural heritage.

Sajikdan, located in Sajik-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul, is the symbol and spiritual center of the Joseon Dynasty’s 500-year history. Having been used as an altar for sacred rites to the god of the earth (‘sa’, 社) and the god of five grains (‘jik’, 㹄), is the cultural site designated as Korean National Treasure No. 121. Unlike the royal shrine of Jongmyo, which is a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site, Sajikdan has been largely abandoned since its title was downgraded to “Sajik Park” during the Japanese occupation as part of the occupational government’s policy to destroy the Korean national spirit.

YÉOL has recognized the need to restore and preserve Sajikdan since our inception in 2002 and has actively pursued the restoration of its original historic authenticity. We have organized forums and volunteers, as well as raised public awareness on the issue.

Since being designated a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site in 1995, Jongmyo has attracted thousands of visitors every year. We look forward to the day Sajikdan will enjoy a similar level of public affection as a centerpiece of Korean history.

YÉOL is the Keeper for Sajikdan as part of the Cultural Heritage Administration’s “One Heritage, One Keeper” campaign. We manage the “Cultural Heritage Supporters” volunteer programs for youth, college students, and the general public. We ask for your support and participation in the program, which consists of education on the historical significance of Sajikdan and volunteer activities such as cleaning the Sajikdan site. Volunteer applications are accepted through the website http://www.1365.go.kr (contact: 02-735-5878).
