In 2013, YÉOL created the “Young Craftsman Award” to recognize promising young craftsmen. The prize is aimed at expanding the field of craftsmanship by encouraging young talents to develop new perspectives on traditional craftsmanship, as well as exploring new applications.

Metal artist Kim Sang Hoon, the 2019 YÉOL Young Craftsman of the Year, works silently and industriously with basic metalworking practices in a world that is increasingly distracted by flashy new materials and techniques. The basics of human life are expressed through the hollowware structure of the work, and the surface is crafted with raising and chasing techniques that both symbolize the ups and downs of life as well as emulate the organic, regular oscillations created by nature’s repetitions. Just like natural phenomena, raising and chasing also involve repetitive strokes made over the course of time; through the strength of his expressive work, symbolism and technique becomes one.
