In 2013, YÉOL created the “Young Craftsman Award” to recognize promising young craftsmen. The prize is aimed at expanding the field of craftsmanship by encouraging young talents to develop new perspectives on traditional craftsmanship, as well as exploring new applications.

The key element of the works of Kwon Won Deok, who received YÉOL’s Young Craftsman Award of the year 2017, is Jjamachum (the traditional joining technique),which joins the wood parts without any use of nails.
Kwon learned traditional furniture making from the late Somokjang (wood furniture artisan) Jo Seok Jin, the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Jeollabuk-do.
Kwon’s new works utilize traditional woodcraft techniques adapted to modern lifestyles.
He aims to construct Korean furniture by combining traditional and modern styles, showcasing its beauty to the world.
